Fact 11

THE BRITISH AND US INTELLIGENCE AGENCIES (MI6 AND CIA) MASTERMINDED GADDAFI’S ASSASSINATION

LIBYA ISLAMIC REBEL GROUP

Overwhelmed by the threat and development of Gaddafi's influence in the Islamic world, several major world powers such as Britain and the United States began to devise some strategies to overthrow Gaddafi in Libya. The history of the formation of the state of Libya witnessed Britain using the Sanussi sect as a proxy for them to remain in power in Libya. The same thing happened in the era of Gaddafi's rule. The great world power countries continued to use other Islamic countries as their proxy to overthrow Gaddafi.

Britain through the MI6 Intelligence Agency and the United States through the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) risked Libyan locals as agents and proxies of the country's military forces. Britain and the United States recruited, trained, and equipped Libyan locals with weapons. In addition, the CIA and MI6 also channelled large financial funds to accomplish their mission. The objective was the same, to overthrow Gaddafi in Libya and demolish the structure of the Islamic State which was gaining influence among African countries.

Gaddafi's rather firm attitude that was not easily swayed by the bait and help of Western countries had made him a Western target. Gaddafi was often denied his voice in defending the sovereignty of Islam and Libya. This could be seen in several political scenarios that saw the West set aside Gaddafi's voice in some Western-designed political considerations.

For example, on August 7, 1998, two US Embassies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and Nairobi, Kenya were bombed, killing 224 people and seriously injuring 4,000 others. Following the bombing tragedy, a total of 900 members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) were sent to the location to search for evidence and important findings in the investigation. Three members of the Al Qaeda group in charge had been identified, namely Abdullah Ahmed Abdullah, Saif Al-Adel, and Ayman Al-Zawahiri. The United States accused the Al Qaeda Group of being responsible for this tragedy.

In response, the United States had planned to launch a Tomahawk missile attack on the Al Qaeda group. Eight terrorist camps, including Tarnak Farms in Afghanistan, had been identified as targets for the American missiles. This American retaliation plan was similar to the attacks on Libya in 1986 and Iraq in 1993.

Ironically, five months before the bombing, Gaddafi had formally applied to Interpol to issue an arrest warrant against Osama bin Laden. Gaddafi managed to sniff something the Al Qaeda Group would do. However, according to information provided by former French presidential adviser, Jacques Chirac and French investigative journalists, the CIA and MI6 were working to prevent Interpol from issuing warrants against Osama bin Laden. The CIA and MI6 deliberately allowed the bombing to be carried out by Osama bin Laden.

“both CIA and MI6 had been actively tried to stop the Interpol warrant from being issued and had sought to ‘downplay the threat’ posed by bin Laden”

(Davidson, 2016, p.149)

Gaddafi viewed the Al Qaeda Group as a major threat to world security.
